9th December, 2014.
Since last May following on the closure of Leisureland and complete lack of Information from Galway City Council to the five main aquatic clubs who use the facility, we Shark Swimming Club, Galway Swimming Club, Laser Swimming Club, Tribes Water Polo and Corrib Water Polo have come together and formed the “Galway Aquatic Community”. We all the above mentioned clubs are totally united in our quest for a fair deal for our membership who use Leisureland.
Briefly, what is happening is Galway City Council have decided to increase the cost of lane hire to the clubs by 10% and have further decided to impose at €2 charge per child per swim.
This increase in lane hire and the extra €2 charge per swim is not viable for Laser Swimming Club or indeed any of the above mentioned clubs who use the Leisureland facility.
We, The Galway Aquatic Community, wrote to the Board of Leisureland, before their last Board Meeting on the 28th November, a copy of this letter can be read by clicking on this link. Please read. Galway Aquatic Clubs 26th Nov 2014.pdf At this meeting on the 28th November, the Board of Leisureland unanimously voted to allow the Galway Aquatic Community back into the pool on the same terms as heretofore, for 6 months at least, whilst a detailed survey would be carried out to see where the facility was losing money. It was further agreed that while the clubs were in the water, Leisureland was not losing money. This decision by the Board was overruled by Tom Connell, Director of Services at Galway City Council and this decision was further backed by Brendan McGrath, Chief Executive of Galway City Council.
We put pen to paper again and this this was delivered to all City Councillors before their meeting last night, 8th December, 2014. It was decided at last night’s meeting that another meeting would be held on at 4PM on Friday, 12th December at City Hall, College Road. There will only be one item on this Agenda – Leisureland.
This meeting will be open to the public.
I am asking you all to please turn-up in large numbers at City Hall next Friday afternoon, from 3.30pm onwards and for the duration of the meeting. Some of us will gain entry to the Gallery but most of us will hold a peaceful protest outside. Please come dressed for the weather and be as colourful as possible. Inflatables, Arm bands, Placards, Flippers, Fins, Water polo balls, Surf Boards, anything is welcome. TG4 will be in attendance as will other media.
This is our last chance to make the authority at City Hall reverse these charges
There is a list of City Councillors and their contact details on our Website and I am asking you all to please Email, Text or Call them with your thoughts in the matter. Every contact with the Councillors is important.
Thank you for reading this letter and please spread the word and come along at 3.30 pm on Friday, 12th December, to City Hall, College Road. I will be there.

Five Swim Ireland Clubs completed the Swim Ireland Clubmark Process in 2012. This is a rare award where only five clubs in Ireland have successfully demonstrated throughout 2012 their willingness to become more professional in their delivery of objectives. The Laser Club Development Plan charts new initiatives to ensure long term development at a pace Laser Swimming Club is comfortable with. In line with everything we do at Laser, the development plan puts the interests of our young swimmers at its core.
Laser SC are delighted to welcome new partners to our swimming club. Ocean Harvest Technology Ltd and Inagh Valley Trust have agreed to sponsor some of the clubs key activities over the coming months.
The club are very grateful for such kind offers and look forward to working in partnership with both organisations.
